A hydronic snow-melt system is a closed loop of PEX tubing embedded in the slab or set under the pavers. A pump circulates a heated mix of water and propylene glycol antifreeze through the tubing, warming the surface above it. The glycol loop is separated from your boiler or heat source by a heat exchanger, so the outdoor loop can't freeze and your heating system stays protected.
The clever part is the controls. A precipitation sensor and a slab sensor work together: when it's snowing and the surface is at or below freezing, the system fires up on its own. It keeps running until the surface is clear and dry, then shuts down. You don't flip a switch at 2am. It just handles the storm, and it sits idle the rest of the winter.

The Installation Reality: Timing Is Everything
Here's the honest part most snowmelt pages skip: the tubing lives under the surface, so the right time to install it is when that surface is being built or replaced. A new concrete pour, a paver walkway project, a driveway replacement, an addition with a new entrance. That's the window.
How the tubing goes in depends on the surface:
