An outdoor unit extracts heat from the air, even in freezing weather, and transfers it into water that circulates through your home's heating system. A refrigeration cycle in the outdoor unit captures thermal energy from outdoor air and transfers it into water through a heat exchanger. That's the same principle as a ductless mini-split, but instead of blowing warm air, the system heats water, which makes it a natural fit for the hydronic heating that's already in most Long Island homes. Many models reverse in summer to produce chilled water for cooling through fan coils or hydronic air handlers.

The Water-Temperature Question: Will It Work With Your Baseboard?
This is the part most heat pump marketing skips, and it's the first thing we check. Air-to-water heat pumps run most efficiently with water temperatures around 90 to 120°F. Traditional Long Island baseboard systems were often sized around 160 to 180°F water. If your radiation was designed for high-temperature water, a heat pump running at lower temperatures may not deliver enough heat on the coldest days without changes.
Depending on what the survey shows, the answer is usually one of these:
- Your Radiation Already Works (Radiant Floors, Oversized Baseboard)
- Add Radiation or Upgrade Emitters (Panel Radiators, Fan Coils)
- Keep a Gas or Oil Boiler as Cold-Weather Backup (Hybrid)
- Add an Electric Backup for Design-Day Cold
That's why a proper heat-loss calculation and a baseboard output survey come before any unit is selected. Hybrid Systems: Heat Pump + Your Existing Boiler
You don't have to rip out your boiler to go electric. In a hybrid (dual-fuel) setup, the air-to-water heat pump handles most of the heating season at high efficiency, and your existing gas or oil boiler kicks in only on the coldest days when baseboard needs hotter water than the heat pump efficiently provides. It's a popular first step for Long Island homeowners who want lower fuel bills without betting the whole house on one system, and it solves the water-temperature problem without replacing radiation.
