Long Island AC Experts: Repair, Replace, Install & Tune-Up

Long Island summers don't ease in. They show up fast, hit hard, and run for weeks. When your AC quits in the middle of a July heat wave, every hour without cool air feels like ten. All Island Comfort has been keeping Suffolk and Nassau County homes cool since 2004 with NATE-certified technicians, EPA-608 refrigerant-certified techs, and trucks stocked for most repairs.

We work on every type of residential AC on Long Island: central split systems, packaged units, ductless mini-splits, multi-zone systems, and high-efficiency variable-speed units. We handle the repair when it breaks, the tune-up before summer to keep it from breaking, and the replacement when it's finally time. Types of Air Conditioning We Service & Install

Air conditioning comes in a few flavors. The right system for your home depends on whether you have ductwork, the size and layout of the house, and how the spaces are used. Here's what we work on:

Central Split Systems

The classic Long Island setup: an outdoor condenser paired with an indoor evaporator coil mounted on top of (or next to) the furnace or air handler. Cooled air is distributed through your existing ductwork. Best for homes with central forced-air heat already in place.

Packaged Units

Combine the condenser and air handler in a single outdoor cabinet, usually rooftop or on a side concrete pad. Common on Long Island ranches and additions where indoor space is tight.

Ductless Mini-Split AC

An outdoor compressor connected by small refrigerant lines to one or more wall-mounted indoor heads. No ductwork needed. Each indoor unit is its own zone, so you can cool just the rooms you use. Mini-splits are ideal for additions, garages, sunrooms, basements, and homes without central air. We're certified installers for Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu, and LG.

Multi-Zone Mini-Split Systems

One outdoor compressor running 2 to 8 indoor heads, each with its own thermostat. Ideal for whole-home cooling without ducts: bedrooms, living areas, and bonus rooms each get their own controllable zone.

Heat Pumps (AC + Heat in One System)

If you're replacing both AC and heating, a heat pump does both jobs from a single system and qualifies for substantial NYS Clean Heat rebates and federal tax credits. See our Long Island heat pump services.

AC Replacement & New Installation

If your AC is over 12 years old, runs on R-22 refrigerant, or you're tired of paying for repairs every summer, replacement is usually the better long-term value. A modern SEER2 16+ system can cut your summer electric bill by 20 to 40 percent compared to an old SEER 10-12 unit.

Signs you should replace rather than repair:

  • System Is 12 to 15+ Years Old
  • Repairs Are Recurring or Expensive
  • Uses R-22 Refrigerant (No Longer Made)
  • Refrigerant Leaks Have Started
  • Inadequate or Uneven Cooling
  • Rising Electric Bills with No Other Cause
  • Loud Operation or New Noises
  • Excess Humidity Indoors
  • Compressor Failure
  • Coil Corrosion or Salt-Air Damage

Cost factors for a Long Island AC install:

  • Type (Central, Packaged, Ductless, Heat Pump)
  • Size in Tons (Based on Manual J)
  • SEER2 Efficiency Rating
  • Brand & Model (Standard vs Variable-Speed)
  • Existing Ductwork Modifications
  • Refrigerant Type (R-454B for new installs)
  • Smart Thermostat & Zoning Add-Ons
  • Permits & Inspections
  • Removal & Disposal of Old Unit
  • Available Rebates & Tax Credits

We do real Manual J load calculations on every install. No oversized units that short-cycle, no undersized units that struggle in August. Call 631-591-2289 for a free in-home estimate.

Annual AC Tune-Ups & Maintenance

Skipping spring AC service is the single most common reason Long Island homeowners deal with mid-summer breakdowns. Our 16-point AC tune-up takes about 60 to 90 minutes and includes:

  • Refrigerant pressure check (high & low side)
  • Detect refrigerant leaks if found
  • Clean indoor evaporator coil
  • Rinse outdoor condenser coil and clear debris
  • Test capacitors and contactors
  • Inspect & lubricate fan motors
  • Check all electrical connections
  • Verify amperage draw on compressor and motors
  • Inspect condensate drain (clear if needed)
  • Test condensate pump if installed
  • Verify thermostat calibration
  • Test temperature differential (return vs supply)
  • Verify airflow (CFM) and duct condition
  • Replace or wash air filter
  • Inspect refrigerant lineset insulation
  • Provide written report with current condition

Maintenance plans bundle the spring AC tune-up with priority scheduling and discounts on parts and labor. Pair with a fall furnace tune-up for full-system coverage. Call 631-591-2289 for current plan pricing.

Understanding SEER2 & the New Refrigerant Standards

Two big things changed in residential AC recently. Here's the short version:

  • SEER2 Replaced SEER: The 2023 efficiency rating uses tougher real-world test conditions. New AC units in the Northeast must hit at least 14.3 SEER2.
  • 16+ SEER2 = Real Savings: Stepping up from a 14.3 to a 17 SEER2 unit pays back in 4 to 7 years through lower electric bills.
  • Variable-Speed Units: Adjust output continuously instead of cycling on and off. Better humidity control, quieter, lower bills.
  • R-22 Is Phased Out: Manufactured for 20+ years, R-22 is no longer produced. Recharging an R-22 system is increasingly expensive and recovered refrigerant only.
  • R-410A Is Phasing Out: The standard for two decades. New residential systems sold from 2025 onward use lower-GWP refrigerants like R-454B.
  • R-454B Is the New Standard: Lower global warming potential, similar performance, what most Long Island installs use today.

For most Long Island homes, the upgrade from a 10-year-old SEER 10-13 unit to a SEER2 16+ system pays back in 5 to 8 years through electric bill savings, often faster with rebates and tax credits applied.

Air Conditioning FAQs

Common Questions About Long Island Air Conditioning

How long does central air conditioning last on Long Island?

A well-maintained central AC system typically lasts 12 to 18 years on Long Island. Ductless mini-splits often last 15 to 20 years. Salt-air conditions in waterfront areas can shorten outdoor unit lifespan, so annual maintenance and coil cleaning matter.

Should I repair or replace my AC?

If your AC is over 12 years old, repair costs are climbing, refrigerant leaks have started, or it uses the older R-22 refrigerant, replacement is usually the better long-term value. A modern SEER2 16+ system can drop summer cooling bills by 20 to 40 percent.

How often should I have my AC tuned up?

We recommend a professional AC tune-up once a year, in spring before the cooling season. Annual maintenance preserves efficiency, catches refrigerant issues early, prevents mid-summer breakdowns, and keeps your manufacturer warranty valid.

What does an AC tune-up include?

Our standard AC tune-up includes a 16-point inspection: refrigerant pressure check, coil cleaning, capacitor and contactor test, fan motor lubrication, electrical connection check, condensate drain inspection, thermostat calibration, airflow verification, and a written efficiency report.

Why is my AC blowing warm air?

Common causes include a tripped breaker on the outdoor unit, low refrigerant from a leak, frozen evaporator coil, dirty filter restricting airflow, failed capacitor on the compressor, or a thermostat set incorrectly. Most are quick fixes once diagnosed.

Why is my AC freezing up?

AC freezing usually means restricted airflow (dirty filter, blocked return, closed registers) or low refrigerant from a leak. Turn the system off to let the ice melt and call us at 631-591-2289 to diagnose. Running a frozen AC can damage the compressor.

What size AC do I need for my home?

AC sizing depends on home size, insulation, window orientation, and ductwork. A real Manual J load calculation prevents oversizing (which short-cycles and humidifies poorly) and undersizing (which never reaches setpoint). We do a proper Manual J on every install.

What's the difference between SEER and SEER2?

SEER2 is the updated efficiency rating standard adopted in 2023 with stricter testing conditions. New residential AC units sold today must meet minimum SEER2 ratings (14.3 for the Northeast). Higher SEER2 means lower summer electric bills. Our techs explain real numbers so you can compare equipment fairly.
