How Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating Works

A boiler or heat pump warms water to a modest temperature, usually 90 to 120°F, far cooler than the 160 to 180°F water baseboard needs. A circulator moves that water through loops of PEX tubing embedded in a concrete slab or fastened under the subfloor. The floor absorbs the heat and releases it slowly and evenly into the room.

Because the heat comes from the entire floor surface instead of one hot strip along the wall, the room heats evenly from your feet up. There's no fan noise, no dust getting blown around, and no cold-air layer at ankle height. The floor itself typically runs in the low 80s°F, warm to bare feet without ever feeling hot.

It pairs just as well with high-efficiency condensing boilers, which condense hardest at low return temperatures.

Can I add radiant floor heating to an existing Long Island home?
