What a Mini Split Blinking Light Usually Means

The light is not random. It is the unit telling you which family of fault it found. Match your symptom here before you touch anything.

What to Check Yourself Before You Call

None of these steps opens the equipment or touches wiring. They take about 20 minutes and they often tell us exactly what is wrong before we leave the shop.

1. Write down the blink pattern (2 minutes). Note which lamp is flashing, how many flashes come before the pause, and whether the remote shows a code. Take a phone video of one full cycle. That pattern is the whole diagnosis in shorthand, so do this before any reset wipes it.

2. Do one breaker reset (10 minutes). Turn off the breaker that feeds the system, wait a full 5 minutes so the boards drain down, then turn it back on. A power glitch or a one-time protection trip clears this way. Reset once only. If the blinking returns, the fault is real, and repeat resets just hide it while the damage grows.

3. Pull and check the filters (5 minutes). Lift the front panel on the indoor head and slide out the mesh filters. If they are matted with dust, rinse them, let them dry, and put them back. Starved airflow can freeze the coil and trip protection codes that look much scarier than a dirty filter.

4. Look for water at the indoor head (2 minutes). Check below the unit for drips or a damp patch on the wall. Water plus a blinking timer light points straight at a clogged condensate drain. Shut the unit off if you see water, because the next stop is your drywall.

5. Check the outdoor unit and the other heads (3 minutes). Look at the outdoor unit while calling for cooling. Is the fan spinning, and is anything blocking the coil? Then try the other indoor heads. One dead head is a different repair than a whole system down, and knowing which saves a diagnostic step.

  • Water is dripping from the indoor head onto walls or floors
  • A burning or electrical smell near either unit

  • Every head is down in serious heat or cold, and someone in the house is elderly, an infant, or medically fragile

It can wait for a daytime appointment:

  • One head blinks but the rest of the house is comfortable

  • The blinking started after an outage and the system runs, just not quite right

How Blink Codes Work on Each Brand

Every brand speaks its own dialect, but they all encode the same idea: count the flashes, or read the code, and you know the fault family. We do not print full code tables here because they vary by model and year. Your indoor unit's manual, or the panel behind the front cover, has the exact list for your machine.

Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi indoor units flash the operation LED in counted groups, and the count maps to a fault. The remote can also pull a two-character code, with E-series codes for things like indoor and outdoor communication and P-series codes for system and pipe faults. An E6 family code, for example, means the indoor and outdoor units stopped talking to each other. Write down the letters and numbers exactly.

Daikin

On a Daikin, the green operation lamp flashing is the tell. You can retrieve the exact code through the wireless remote by holding the Cancel button until the unit beeps, then stepping through codes until it gives a long beep. That two-character code, such as the U-series for outdoor and refrigerant faults, is what to read us over the phone.

Fujitsu

Fujitsu units flash the Operation and Timer lamps together in a two-part rhythm. Count the flashes on each lamp, because the pair forms a two-digit code. A steady Filter light is not an error at all, just a cleaning reminder. Note both counts and whether the pattern repeats.

LG

LG heads usually make it easy by showing a CH code, such as CH 05 or CH 61, right on the indoor display or the remote. CH codes map to the same fault families as other brands' blink counts. Photograph the display before you reset anything.

The Five Fault Families Behind the Blinking

Brands differ on codes, but almost every mini split fault lands in one of five buckets. Knowing the bucket tells you how urgent it is and roughly what the fix looks like.

Drain and float faults

This is the timer-light classic. The indoor head collects condensate in a pan, and a small float switch shuts the unit down when the pan cannot drain. The usual cause is algae or debris clogging the drain line. A wet-vac sealed over the outdoor end of the drain line will sometimes pull the clog out and clear the code, which is why some homeowners fix this one themselves. If the line clogs again within weeks, the line needs a proper cleaning or a re-pitch.

Communication faults

The indoor and outdoor units talk over a signal wire, and when that conversation drops, the system blinks and stops. Causes range from a loose or corroded connection to a failing control board, and outages and surges trigger it often. This one is not a homeowner repair, because the fix means testing live low-voltage signals. It is also the fault a 5-minute breaker reset most often clears for good.

Refrigerant and pressure faults

Low charge, a slow leak, or a blocked coil pushes pressures out of range, and the unit shuts down to save the compressor. The giveaway is a system that runs a few minutes and then quits with a blink code. Do not keep restarting it. Running a system low on charge overheats the compressor, and the compressor is the most expensive part in the system.

Sensor faults

Small thermistors report coil and air temperatures, and when one drifts or fails, the unit stops trusting its own readings. Sensor codes are usually the cheapest fix on this list. The unit may even keep limping along, but it will cool poorly and cycle oddly until the sensor is replaced.

Outdoor unit faults

Fan motor failures, compressor issues, and outdoor board faults all blink back at the indoor head. If the outdoor fan never spins, or the unit hums without starting, say so when you call. On a multi-zone system, an outdoor fault takes every head down at once.

One Head Blinking Versus Every Head Down

On a multi-zone system, this single observation cuts the problem in half. One blinking head with the others running points at that head, usually its sensors, its drain line, or the wiring feeding it. The shared outdoor unit is almost certainly fine, so the repair is smaller and it can usually wait for a daytime visit.

Every head down at once points at what they share. That means the outdoor unit, the main power feed, or the communication link. Check your electrical panel first, then look at the outdoor unit. If the panel is fine and the outdoor unit is silent, the outdoor unit is the patient, and that call should happen today.

Why Mini Split Calls Look Different on Long Island

Salt air is the big one. Within a mile or two of either shore, outdoor coils and control boards corrode years ahead of schedule, and corroded board connections are behind many of the communication codes we chase in Nassau beach communities and along both forks. Long Island mini splits also work twice as hard as most, because so many of them heat all winter as cold-climate heat pumps, not just cool in July. Will turning the breaker off and on clear the error code?
