What to Check Yourself Before You Call
These five checks take about 20 minutes and cost nothing. They sort the false alarms from the real failures, and they hand us a head start if you do need a visit.
1. Run the two-thermometer test (5 minutes). Hold a thermometer in the air coming out of a supply vent and note the number. Then hold it at the return grille where air gets pulled in. A working heat pump shows a rise of 15 to 25 degrees between the two. If the supply reads 88 and the return reads 70, your system is heating fine, even if the air feels cool on your skin.
2. Give defrost 10 minutes (10 minutes). In cold weather the outdoor coil frosts up, and the system reverses briefly to melt it. During that cycle the indoor air turns cool, and the outdoor unit may hiss and throw off a cloud of steam. That cloud is not smoke. If warm air is back within 10 minutes or so, nothing is wrong.
3. Check the thermostat, especially a new one (2 minutes). Confirm the mode is Heat, not Cool or Fan. Then think back. If the cold air started right after a thermostat swap, the O/B reversing valve setting is likely wrong, and the system is literally air conditioning your house in heat mode. The giveaway is a system that cools when set to heat and heats when set to cool.
4. Look at the outdoor unit (3 minutes). The fan on top should spin whenever the system runs. A light coat of frost that comes and goes is normal. A unit buried in snow, choked with leaves, or encased in solid ice is not. Clear snow and debris away by hand, but never chip at ice with tools, because the coil fins bend and the refrigerant lines puncture easily.
5. Check the filter (2 minutes). Hold the filter up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, replace it. Weak airflow across the indoor coil makes the air feel cooler and forces the system to work harder. It is the cheapest fix on this whole page.
Call Now or Can It Wait

- The outdoor unit is a solid block of ice that defrost never clears
- The two-thermometer test shows little or no temperature rise and the house is below 60
- Ice is forming on the copper lines at the outdoor unit

Why Warm Heat Pump Air Feels Cold
A furnace pushes out air at 120 to 140 degrees. A heat pump pushes out air at 85 to 95 degrees. Both can heat the same house to the same 70, because the heat pump moves more air for longer. The difference is how the air feels on the way.
Your skin sits around 90 degrees. Air blowing at 88 degrees is below skin temperature, so it feels cool even while it adds heat to the room. Anyone who switched from an oil boiler or a furnace notices this in the first cold week. The vents that used to blast hot now blow something closer to lukewarm, and it feels broken when it is not.
That is why the thermometer test matters more than your hand. A 15 to 25 degree rise from return to supply means the machine is doing its job. A rise of 5 degrees or less means it is not, and that is a real service call. One number settles the question that a hand near the vent never can.
Defrost, Auxiliary Heat, and Emergency Heat
Three normal heat pump behaviors get mistaken for failures. Knowing them saves a lot of worry and a few service calls.
Defrost mode
In heating mode the outdoor coil gets cold and pulls moisture from the air, and that moisture freezes on the coil. The system clears it by flipping into cooling mode for a few minutes, which sends hot refrigerant through the outdoor coil to melt the frost. Indoors you feel cool air, and outdoors you see steam rising off the unit. A defrost cycle runs up to about 10 minutes and may repeat every half hour to 90 minutes in damp cold weather. Frequent defrost on a raw wet day is normal, and defrost that never clears the ice is not.
Auxiliary heat
Most heat pumps carry electric backup strips that stage on when the outdoor air gets too cold for the heat pump to keep up. The thermostat brings them on by itself, and many display Aux Heat while it happens. If your house loses ground only on the coldest nights, those strips may not be staging on at all. A failed strip, a bad sequencer, or a wiring fault in the thermostat can all block them, and each is a technician repair.
Emergency Heat
Emergency Heat is a manual switch that shuts the heat pump off and runs the backup strips alone. Use it in one situation only, which is a heat pump that is actually broken, such as an iced-up or dead outdoor unit. It is a limp-home mode, not a comfort setting.
Resistance strips make heat straight from electricity instead of moving it, so they burn through far more power for the same warmth. Leave Emergency Heat on all winter and the PSEG bill will show it. Flip it on, call for repair, and flip it back off once the heat pump is fixed.
The Failures Behind Truly Cold Air
If the thermometer shows little or no rise and defrost is not the story, one of a few real faults is at work. None of them are homeowner repairs, but each leaves clues you can report.
Wrong O/B setting after a thermostat swap
The reversing valve is what flips a heat pump between heating and cooling, and one thermostat wire controls it. Some brands energize that wire in cooling and others in heating, so every new thermostat asks an O/B question during setup. Get it backwards and the system runs cooling on every call for heat. If your cold air dates from the day a new thermostat went in, say so when you call, because this is a fast fix.
Stuck reversing valve
The valve itself can jam or leak between its two positions. A stuck valve leaves the system trapped in cooling, and a leaking one bleeds hot refrigerant away so the air comes out tepid. A soft hissing at the outdoor unit is a common clue. Valve replacement is one of the bigger heat pump repairs, so on old equipment we price it against replacement and show both numbers.
Low refrigerant from a leak
Refrigerant is the bloodstream of a heat pump, and it does not get used up. If it is low, it leaked. Low charge shows up as weak lukewarm air, long run times, and sometimes ice on the copper lines or the coil. The right repair is finding and fixing the leak, then weighing in the correct charge. A top-off without a leak search just rents you a few warm weeks before the same call happens again.
Ice block from failed defrost
When a defrost sensor or control board fails, frost builds on frost until the outdoor unit becomes a solid block. Airflow through the coil stops, and the heat pump has nothing to work with. Switch to Emergency Heat, shut the unit off, and call. Do not chip ice off the coil, and do not pour hot water over it in freezing weather, because you will trade an ice problem for a bigger one.
Dirty filter and dirty coils
Restricted airflow makes supply air feel cooler and drags efficiency down on both ends of the system. A matted outdoor coil, common near the beach where salt sticks to the fins, quietly steals capacity all season. This is what annual maintenance exists to catch. Dual-fuel homes need the same attention, since many Long Island systems pair a heat pump with the old oil boiler as backup, and a lazy changeover setting can leave either one doing the wrong job.
What We Do When We Arrive

Then we measure the actual temperature rise, check the refrigerant pressures, watch a defrost cycle, and test the reversing valve and the backup heat stages one at a time. On a suspected leak we search with an electronic detector rather than guessing. The point is to name the fault, not to swap parts until something helps.

Heat pumps are the newest heater on the block here, and many of ours went in through oil-to-heat-pump conversions in the last few years. Owners raised on oil heat expect 130-degree air from a vent, so the 90-degree supply air of a properly working heat pump generates more worried calls than any actual fault. Plenty of those conversions kept the oil boiler as dual-fuel backup, and a changeover set wrong can leave the boiler idle on the one night it was kept for. Homes that replaced steam radiators run ducted systems that were sized for a boiler, and undersized ducts make cool-feeling air worse.
Salt air is the other local tax. Coils within a mile or two of the shore corrode and mat up faster, which cuts heating capacity and stretches defrost cycles. Our damp marine cold means heavy frost loads, so outdoor units here defrost more often than the same unit would upstate. After a PSEG outage, some inverter units sit through a delay before restarting, and a few need a manual reset. That combination keeps our winter phone busy in ways a national checklist never mentions.
