A mini-split has two halves. Outside, a compressor unit sits on a small pad or wall brackets. Inside, one or more air handlers (called heads) mount on a wall, ceiling, or floor. The two halves connect through a small bundle of refrigerant lines, a condensate drain, and a control wire, all of which pass through a hole about three inches wide.
Because the refrigerant carries the heat, there's no ductwork to run and none of the 20 to 30 percent energy loss that leaky ducts cause. In summer, the system pulls heat out of your rooms and moves it outside, like any air conditioner. In winter, it reverses: the outdoor unit extracts heat from cold outdoor air and delivers it inside. One system, both seasons, and every head has its own remote or wall thermostat, so the bedroom can sit at 68 while the living room holds 72.
Indoor Unit Styles: More Than the Wall Box
Most people picture the white wall-mounted unit, but mini-splits come in four indoor styles. Picking the right one for each room is half the design work:
Wall-Mounted Units
The standard. Mounts high on an exterior or interior wall, washable filters slide out from the front, and airflow louvers sweep the room. The most affordable style per zone and the easiest to service. Best for living rooms, bedrooms, and additions.
Slim Ceiling Cassettes
Recessed into the ceiling between joists, showing only a flat grille. Air washes out in two or four directions, which covers square rooms more evenly than a wall unit. A clean look for kitchens, primary suites, and rooms where wall space is spoken for.
Floor Consoles
Sits low on the wall, roughly where a radiator would. A natural fit for Long Island homes with knee walls, big windows, or half-story upstairs rooms where there's no wall height for a standard unit. Heats especially well because warm air starts at floor level.
Compact Ducted Air Handlers
A short, hidden unit in a closet, soffit, or attic that feeds two or three nearby rooms through short duct runs. You get ductless efficiency with nothing visible but small grilles. This is how we serve clusters of small bedrooms without hanging a head in each one.
Single-Zone vs. Multi-Zone Mini-Splits
A single-zone system is one outdoor unit paired with one indoor head. It's the right call for a garage, a sunroom, a bonus room over the garage, or one addition that the rest of the house's system doesn't reach.
A multi-zone system runs 2 to 8 indoor heads off a single outdoor unit. Each head keeps its own thermostat, so every bedroom, the living area, and the finished basement get independent control from one compressor outside. Multi-zone is how a whole cape or ranch without ducts gets heated and cooled in one project. The trap to avoid is oversizing: a multi-zone outdoor unit that's too big for the connected heads will short cycle and dehumidify poorly. We size the outdoor unit to the real load of the connected zones, not to a round number.
Cold-Climate Mini-Splits for Long Island Winters
Standard mini-splits lose heating capacity as the temperature drops. Cold-climate models are built differently: they maintain their rated heating capacity down to about -5°F. Mitsubishi's Hyper-Heating (H2i) line delivers 100 percent of rated capacity at 5°F and keeps running to -13°F, and Fujitsu's XLTH line is built for the same duty.
Long Island's winter design temperature is only around 11 to 15°F, so a properly sized cold-climate mini-split covers the whole heating season here, not just the shoulder months. Mini-Split Cleaning & Maintenance
A mini-split's biggest enemy is dirt. The filters are washable, and rinsing them every 2 to 4 weeks during heavy use is a homeowner job. What filters can't catch builds up on the blower wheel and coil inside the head, where it cuts airflow, breeds odors, and feeds the algae that clogs condensate lines. Our annual mini-split maintenance includes:
- Wash filters and clean the head's cabinet
- Deep-clean the blower wheel
- Clean the indoor coil
- Flush the condensate line and clean the drain pan
- Rinse the outdoor coil (critical near the shore, where salt air corrodes fins)
- Check refrigerant pressures and look for leaks
