24/7 Emergency Water Heater Repair Across Long Island

When the water heater quits, you usually don't notice until the morning shower runs cold or the dishwasher won't fill with hot water. By then the tank could be empty, leaking, or running on a failed pilot or burned-out heating element. The fix depends on what you have: gas tank, electric tank, tankless, indirect (boiler-driven), or oil-fired (rare but still around on Long Island). The page also covers "emergency hot water repair," which is how some Long Island residents describe the same need.

All Island Comfort dispatches water heater specialists across Long Island 24/7. Our trucks carry thermocouples, electric heating elements (4500W and 5500W in 240V), gas control valves, dip tubes, anode rods, and the most common tankless error-code parts (flame rods, igniters, gas valves) for Rinnai, Navien, Noritz, A.O. Smith, and Rheem tankless units. The same Wading River number rings to a real dispatcher 24/7.

If you have no hot water, lukewarm water, water leaking from the tank, a pilot that won't stay lit, an electric water heater breaker that keeps tripping, or a tankless unit showing an error code, call us. We'll triage on the phone and dispatch immediately.

Every Water Heater Type We Repair

Long Island has every common water heater configuration. Our techs work on all of them.

  • Gas tank water heaters (40, 50, 75 gallon): A.O. Smith, Rheem, Bradford White, State, GE, Whirlpool. Standing pilot and FVIR (flammable vapor ignition resistant) styles.
  • Electric tank water heaters (40, 50, 80 gallon): Resistance-element electric tanks. Upper and lower element diagnostics, thermostat replacement, dip tube repair.
  • Tankless gas water heaters: Wall-hung on-demand units: Rinnai, Navien, Noritz, Bosch, A.O. Smith. Error-code reading, flame-rod cleaning, gas-valve and igniter replacement.
  • Indirect water heaters (boiler-driven): Tank-style water heaters heated by the boiler through an internal coil. Aquastat, sensor, and zone-control diagnostics.
  • Oil-fired water heaters: Bock, Burnham, Peerless oil-fired tank water heaters. Less common on Long Island but still installed in some older homes.
  • Heat pump water heaters: A.O. Smith Voltex, Rheem ProTerra, GE GeoSpring. Compressor, evaporator, condenser, and refrigerant diagnostics. Eligible for federal Section 25C tax credit.
  • Power-vented gas water heaters: Gas water heaters with sidewall PVC venting and a fan. Pressure-switch and venting diagnostics.
  • Direct-vent gas water heaters: Sealed-combustion gas water heaters that draw outside air. Concentric or two-pipe vent specifics.
  • Standing-pilot gas water heaters: Older gas water heaters with a continuous pilot. Thermocouple replacement on the spot.
  • Combi boilers (heat + domestic hot water): Wall-hung gas combi boilers. Plate heat exchanger, flow sensor, modulating gas valve.
  • Solar water heaters with backup: Solar thermal systems with electric or gas backup. Pump, controller, and backup-element diagnostics.
  • Recirculation pumps & under-sink instant water heaters: Hot-water recirculation systems and point-of-use water heaters. Pump, sensor, and timer diagnostics.

Common Water Heater Emergency Symptoms

Water heater failures present in distinct ways. Knowing the symptom helps us route the right tech with the right parts on the truck.

No Hot Water at All

Cold water at every fixture. Gas water heater: pilot is out (older units) or igniter/gas valve has failed (newer units). Electric water heater: tripped breaker, both elements burned out, or thermostat failure. Tankless: error code, ignition failure, or flow sensor problem. Indirect: boiler is in lockout or aquastat has failed.

Lukewarm Water Only

Some heat but not enough. Gas tank: lower flame restriction or partial gas valve failure. Electric tank: one element failed (typically the lower one), so the upper element heats only the top third of the tank. Tankless: undersized for current draw or partial flame failure. Indirect: aquastat priority or sensor calibration off.

Pilot Won't Stay Lit (Standing-Pilot Gas Water Heaters)

Almost always the thermocouple. Inexpensive part, 30-minute fix. We carry universal and brand-specific thermocouples on every truck. If the new thermocouple still won't hold the pilot, the gas valve is the next suspect.

Tankless Showing Error Code

Rinnai (LC, 11, 12, 14), Navien (003, 010, 016, 027, 036), Noritz (3, 11, 16) all have specific error codes that point to specific failures. We carry the diagnostic tools and parts for each major brand.

Water Leaking from the Tank

Three possibilities: relief valve discharging (overpressure or temperature), tank fitting leak (drain valve, dielectric union), or tank rupture from corrosion. Tank rupture means the water heater is at end-of-life, leak grows fast. Shut off the cold-water supply at the top of the tank, and for gas units shut off the gas valve. Then call us. Tank rupture = replacement, not repair.

Electric Water Heater Breaker Keeps Tripping

Burned-out element shorted to the tank, failed thermostat, or wiring problem. Do not keep resetting the breaker, that risks element damage and electrical-panel issues. Call us.

Discolored or Smelly Hot Water

Brown/orange water = corroded tank or anode rod failure. Rotten-egg smell = anaerobic bacteria reaction with anode rod (especially well-water homes). Both fixable: anode replacement or full tank flush, sometimes both.

Popping or Rumbling Sounds from the Tank

Sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank causing steam pockets to form and burst. Reduces efficiency and shortens tank life. Tank flush is the fix, sometimes combined with anode rod replacement.

Tank Leaking? Shut Off Water First.

If the tank is actively leaking, shut the cold-water supply off at the top of the tank, shut the gas valve to "off" (or breaker for electric), then call us. We'll dispatch immediately.

Our 4-Step Rapid Response for Water Heater Emergencies

  1. 1
Triage on the call. A real Long Island dispatcher answers and walks through your symptoms. We rule out anything you can fix in 60 seconds (thermostat, breaker, reset button), then dispatch immediately. No phone tree, no offshore call center.
  2. 2
Local tech to your door. Typical response is 1 to 3 hours across Suffolk and Nassau, faster for the North Shore corridor between Wading River and Port Jefferson. Your tech texts when 15 minutes out.
  3. 3
Diagnose and quote before any wrench moves. Flat diagnostic fee, written quote on-site, your written approval before any repair starts. No surprise charges, no upselling.
  4. 4
Restore hot water tonight when possible. About 85% of our water heater emergency calls finish on the first visit because the trucks carry thermocouples, electric heating elements, gas control valves, dip tubes, anode rods, and the most common tankless parts. Tank ruptures need full replacement, which we handle separately on the water heater replacement page.

What to Do While You Wait for the Technician

  • If the tank is leaking, shut off the cold-water supply at the top of the tank, then shut the gas valve to "off" (gas) or breaker (electric).
  • Check the breaker (electric water heaters). If tripped repeatedly, do not keep resetting.
  • Try relighting the pilot once (older standing-pilot gas units). Instructions are on the data plate.
  • Read the error code (tankless units). Note the code to tell the dispatcher when you call.
  • Place towels under any small drip and bucket any active leak. Move valuables off the floor near the tank.
  • Avoid running washing machines or dishwashers until the system is fixed, to prevent making any leak worse.
  • Test water at multiple fixtures to confirm the problem is the water heater (not just one faucet).

FAQs

Long Island Emergency Water Heater Repair FAQs

Is emergency water heater repair the same as emergency hot water repair?

Yes. "Emergency hot water repair" is how many Long Island residents describe the same problem: the water heater has failed and you have no hot water. Same crew, same dispatch.

How fast can you respond to a water heater emergency?

Typical response is 1 to 3 hours across Suffolk and Nassau counties. Tank ruptures and active leaks get top dispatch priority because of water-damage risk.

Do you fix tankless water heaters?

Yes. We work on all major tankless brands: Rinnai, Navien, Noritz, Bosch, A.O. Smith, Rheem. Tankless diagnostics require the manufacturer's specific error code chart and often a multimeter or laptop interface, which we carry.

How much does emergency water heater repair cost on Long Island?

Diagnostic fee is flat and disclosed on the phone. Common water heater repairs (thermocouple $150-$200, gas valve $300-$500, electric heating element $200-$350, anode rod replacement $200-$300, tankless flame rod cleaning $200-$300, tankless igniter $300-$500) typically run $200 to $700 parts and labor. Tank ruptures mean replacement, not repair.

My water heater is leaking from the bottom. Can you repair it?

Usually no. Bottom leaks almost always indicate corrosion of the tank shell. The tank cannot be patched safely, and the leak grows. Replacement is the right call. We can install same-day or next-day in most cases (see the replacement page).

Can you fix a water heater that's making a popping sound?

Yes. Popping is sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank causing steam pockets. Tank flush solves it on most units. If the sediment is severe and corrosion has started, replacement may be the better long-term call.

Do you cover Nassau County for water heater emergencies?

Yes. We cover all of Nassau County including Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Long Beach, Garden City, Hicksville, Levittown, Massapequa, Mineola, Freeport, Plainview, Syosset, Bethpage, Manhasset, Great Neck, Port Washington, Glen Cove, Rockville Centre, and surrounding areas.

Will my home warranty cover water heater repair?

Many home warranties cover water heater repairs, depending on age and cause of failure. We perform the diagnosis and provide an itemized invoice you submit to the warranty company. We don't work directly with home warranty dispatch networks.
