Steam and hot water fail in different ways. Figure out which one you have before you touch anything. A steam radiator has one or two big pipes and a small vent on the side. A hot-water radiator or baseboard has a small bleed screw at the top instead.

What to Check Yourself Before You Call
These five checks are safe for any homeowner. They need a towel, a radiator key, and about 15 minutes. No tools go inside the boiler.
1. Check the valve position (2 minutes). Find the big valve where the pipe enters the radiator. On steam, it must be fully open or fully closed, never halfway. A half-open steam valve traps condensate and causes banging and cold sections. On hot water, just confirm the valve is open by turning it counterclockwise until it stops.
2. Listen for the vent hiss on steam (3 minutes). Turn the thermostat up and stand by the cold radiator. A working steam vent hisses as air escapes, then closes with a quiet click when steam arrives. A vent that never hisses is stuck shut, and the air inside blocks the steam. That one small part is the top cause of a cold steam radiator.
3. Bleed one hot-water radiator (5 minutes). With the system warm, hold a towel under the bleed screw at the top. Open it a quarter turn with a radiator key and let the air hiss out. Close the screw as soon as a steady stream of water appears. Start on the top floor, because air rises to the highest radiators first.
4. Confirm the boiler is actually running (3 minutes). Go to the boiler and watch it try to start. On steam, check the sight glass, since a low water line holds the burner off on the low-water cutoff. On hot water, note the pressure and temperature readings. Silence at the boiler means the problem is upstream of your radiators.
5. Note the pattern (2 minutes). One cold radiator points at that radiator. One cold floor or zone points at a zone valve or trapped air in one loop. A whole house of cold radiators points at the boiler itself. Tell us the pattern when you call, because it decides what goes on the truck.

Repeat air in a hot-water loop is worth a daytime visit even though it feels minor. Air keeps getting in for a reason, and that reason is usually a small leak or a failing expansion tank.
Steam Radiators: The Vent Does the Work
A one-pipe steam radiator cannot heat until the air inside it gets out of the way. The little vent on the side is the exit door. When the vent sticks shut, air sits trapped and steam never enters, so the radiator stays stone cold while its neighbors cook. Replacement vents are cheap parts, and swapping one is a quick job on a service call.
Pitch matters too. A steam radiator must tilt slightly toward its supply valve so condensate drains back to the boiler. A radiator that has settled away from the valve holds water, gurgles, bangs, and heats poorly. A checker or small shim under the far legs restores the pitch.
When several steam radiators at the far end of the house lag or stay cold, look past the radiators. The main vents at the ends of the steam mains in the basement do the heavy lifting, and a clogged main vent slows steam to that whole side of the house. If the boiler will not fire at all, check the sight glass first. The low-water cutoff holds the burner off until the water line comes back, and that safety doing its job is the most common dead steam boiler we see.
Hot-Water Radiators and Baseboard: Air, Zones, and Flow
Hot water heats by circulation, so anything that stops flow makes a cold radiator. Trapped air is the usual suspect, and bleeding clears it. If one whole zone stays cold while another heats, the zone valve for that loop has likely failed, since a stuck valve blocks flow even when the thermostat calls. A dead circulator pump kills flow to everything on its loop, and you can often hear the difference between a healthy hum and silence.
Thermostatic radiator valves cause their own quiet failures. A TRV that sat closed all summer can stick, and the pin under the head stays down so no water passes. Turning the head to the highest setting sometimes frees it. If not, the valve needs service, and forcing it with pliers damages the seat.
Baseboard has two failure points people walk past every day. The thin aluminum fins inside the cover do the actual heating, and crushed or dust-packed fins cannot shed heat into the room even with hot water flowing. Vacuum the fins each fall and straighten bent ones gently. Furniture, drapes, and pet beds parked against the baseboard block the convection loop the same way, so keep a few inches clear below and above.
Cold at the Top or Cold at the Bottom
The two system types read in opposite ways, and this is where homeowners get burned by generic advice. On hot water, a radiator that is cold at the top has air trapped up high, and bleeding fixes it. Cold at the bottom with a warm top means sludge has settled in the base, and that calls for a flush, not a bleed key.
Steam flips the logic. A steam radiator fills with steam from the top down, so a warm top and cool base during a cycle can be normal. A steam radiator that is cold everywhere has an air problem at the vent, not a water problem inside. There is no bleed screw on a steam radiator, and opening the wrong fitting on a hot steam system can release scalding steam. When in doubt, leave the wrench in the drawer and describe the symptom to us instead.

Pre-1960s housing in Nassau and western Suffolk runs thick with one-pipe steam, and those systems are now 60 to 100 years old. Original vents from that era are long past their service life, so a stuck vent is a weekly find for us. About a third of the homes we service heat with oil, and an oil burner lockout after a cold snap shows up first as radiators that never warm. Power plays a part too. After a PSEG outage, some boiler controls do not restart on their own, and every radiator in the house sits cold until the control is reset.
