What to Check Yourself Before You Call
These five checks need a level, a flashlight, and about fifteen minutes. What you find tells us exactly what to bring.
1. Figure out which system you have (3 minutes). Cast iron radiators fed by one large pipe, each with a small air vent on the side, mean one-pipe steam. Low metal baseboard along the walls means hot water. If the bang only follows a faucet or an appliance, the heating system is innocent and you have plumbing water hammer.
2. Pin down when the bang happens (2 minutes). Note whether the noise comes as the heat starts, while it runs, or the moment water shuts off somewhere. Heat-related timing points at the boiler and its piping. Water-related timing points at the supply plumbing. Write down the time of day too, because a bang at six in the morning usually means the thermostat setback just ended.
3. Check every radiator valve (3 minutes). On one-pipe steam, the big valve at the base of each radiator must be fully open or fully closed. A valve left halfway traps condensate inside the radiator, and steam slams into that pooled water on the next cycle. Turn each valve gently to one end of its travel. Never force a stiff one, because old valve stems snap.
4. Set a level on the noisy radiator (5 minutes). A one-pipe steam radiator should tilt slightly toward its supply valve so water drains back out. Houses settle, and a radiator that has gone flat or tilts the wrong way holds water that steam will hammer. If the bubble shows a back-tilt, that is likely your answer. Checkers or wood shims under the far legs are a common fix, but let us confirm the piping first.
5. Note which room and which pipe (2 minutes). Walk the basement while the heat starts and follow the sound. A bang from one spot in a main line means a sag or a failed pipe hanger at that spot. Mark it with tape if you can reach it safely. Telling us the room and the spot often cuts the visit time in half.

Steam Water Hammer: The Deep Bang When the Heat Starts
One-pipe steam is simple and rugged, but it depends on gravity. Steam leaves the boiler through the same pipes that drain condensate back down. When water pools where it should drain, steam moving through the main picks up that slug of water and drives it into the next elbow. The bang you hear is water hitting cast iron at high speed. That is steam water hammer, and it always has a mechanical cause you can find.
Pipe pitch and sagging mains
Every steam main and every runout must slope so condensate runs downhill to the boiler. A pitch of about one inch in ten feet is the old standard. Houses settle over decades, pipe hangers rust and let go, and a main develops a low spot that holds a puddle. Each heating cycle, steam slams into that puddle in the same place. The fix is re-hanging and re-pitching the sagged section, which is boiler-room work with pipe jacks and new hangers.
Radiator valves and radiator slope
The two radiator rules do most of the quieting. First, every one-pipe steam radiator valve stays fully open or fully closed, never in between. Second, the radiator itself must pitch toward that valve so water drains out through the same pipe the steam came in. A half-open valve or a flat radiator turns the radiator into a water trap. The level check and the valve check above catch both.
Main vents that no longer breathe
Air has to leave the mains before steam can fill them. The main vents near the ends of the basement piping do that job, and they clog with rust over the years. A plugged main vent makes steam push against trapped air, which slows the system, drives up fuel use, and shoves condensate around in ways that end in hammering. Vents are cheap parts, and replacing tired ones is one of the highest-value repairs on any steam system.
Wet steam from a flooded or surging boiler
The boiler itself can cause hammer. If the water line in the sight glass sits too high, there is no room to make dry steam, and the boiler throws water up into the mains. Dirty or oily boiler water causes surging, where the water line bounces and slugs of water ride out with the steam. Watch the sight glass while the burner runs. A calm line near the middle is right, while a bouncing line or a flooded glass means the boiler needs a skim and a proper water level, not just patience.
The Tick and Click of Baseboard Heat Is Normal
Hot-water baseboard makes a different noise, and most of it is harmless. The copper tube inside the baseboard grows as 180°F water enters it, and it slides across its metal supports as it does. That sliding is the tick, tick, tick you hear when a zone starts, and again as it cools. It is expansion, not water hammer, and it does not damage anything.
There is one version worth a call. If the sound is a hard knock instead of a light tick, the pipe may be pinched where it passes through a floor plate or joist with no room to move. The pipe binds, then jumps, and the knock carries through the framing. That is a simple access-and-cushion repair, and it is worth doing because a pipe that cannot move wears at the rub point.
Plumbing Water Hammer: The Thud When Water Shuts Off
True plumbing water hammer has nothing to do with heat. Water moving through your supply pipes has real momentum. When a valve snaps shut, that moving column stops in an instant, and the shock wave slams through the piping as a thud or a bang. Washing machines and dishwashers are the usual triggers, because their electric solenoid valves close far faster than any hand faucet.
Older homes were built with air chambers, which are short vertical stubs of pipe near fixtures that hold a cushion of air. Those chambers fill with water over the years and stop cushioning anything. Newer fixes use water hammer arrestors, which are small sealed shock absorbers piped in near the offending valve. High house pressure makes every hammer worse, so we check pressure at a hose bib and look at the pressure-reducing valve if the reading runs high. Left alone, repeated hammer loosens joints, stresses supply hoses, and can fail a washing machine hose, which is one of the worst floods a house can have.
