What to Check Yourself Before You Press Anything

These five checks take about ten minutes and need no tools. Do them in order, because the reset press comes last for a reason.

1. Read the tank gauge, then doubt it (2 minutes). Look at the float gauge on top of the tank. Below a quarter tank, treat low oil as your prime suspect. Gauges on older tanks stick, so a gauge reading a quarter can sit on a dry tank. Tap the glass gently and see if the disc drops.

2. Confirm the thermostat is calling (2 minutes). Set the thermostat to Heat and raise it 5 degrees above room temperature. A burner with no call for heat looks exactly like a locked-out burner. Wait three minutes, since many controls have a start delay.

3. Find the service switches (2 minutes). Check the switch on or near the unit and the red emergency switch, often at the top of the basement stairs. Both look like light switches and both get bumped. The red wall switch is a shutoff, not a reset, so flipping it does not clear a lockout.

4. Press the reset button once and stay put (2 minutes). Find the red button on the burner's primary control, the small box on the burner itself. Press it one time and keep your hand off it after that. Stand by the unit for the full start attempt instead of walking away.

5. Listen to what the burner does (2 minutes). A hum with ignition and steady flame means you are back in business for now. A hum that runs and dies means fuel is reaching the burner but the flame will not hold. An instant lockout with barely a sound means the control sees a fault before the attempt even starts. One clean reset that holds is not an emergency. A second lockout is a mechanical fact, and no amount of button pressing will change it.

Why You Only Press the Reset Button Once

Every start attempt sprays a fine mist of oil into the combustion chamber. When ignition works, that mist burns instantly. When ignition fails, the oil has nowhere to go. It soaks the chamber floor and pools there as raw fuel.

Press the button five times and you have five sprays of unburned oil sitting in the chamber. When the burner finally lights, that puddle can ignite all at once. Technicians call it a puffback. It can blow soot through every room in the house, and a bad one can damage the boiler or furnace itself. Cleaning up after a puffback costs far more than any lockout repair.

Newer primary controls, like the Honeywell R7184 and the Beckett GeniSys, also count your presses. After about three failed attempts, they enter a restricted or hard lockout that a homeowner cannot clear. At that point the button does nothing until a technician resets the control with the right procedure. One press protects your house and keeps the control out of hard lockout.

Seven Reasons Oil Burners Lock Out

A lockout always has a cause. These seven cover nearly every reset call we run, roughly in the order we check them.

1. The tank is empty or nearly empty

The most common cause is also the simplest. Below an eighth of a tank, the fuel line can start pulling air instead of oil, and the flame dies. Sticky gauges hide this all the time. If your last delivery was months ago, assume the tank first.

2. Sludge pulled from a low tank

Oil tanks grow a layer of sludge on the bottom over the years. Run the level low, and the pump starts drinking from that layer. Sludge clogs the filter and the nozzle, sometimes days after the tank is refilled. This is why burners often lock out right after a delivery, when the fill stirs the bottom of the tank.

3. A clogged fuel filter or nozzle

The filter catches debris before it reaches the burner, and the nozzle meters oil through an opening finer than a human hair. Either one can plug enough to starve or distort the flame. A nozzle costs a few dollars as a part, which is why an annual tune-up that replaces it is cheap insurance.

4. Gelled oil in an outdoor tank or exposed line

Heating oil starts to thicken around 16 degrees F and can gel like wax in single-digit cold. Outdoor tanks and fuel lines that run through crawl spaces or along outside walls are the victims. The burner starves even with a half-full tank. Additives and line insulation prevent it, but once oil has gelled, it needs a technician to get flow back.

5. A weak ignition transformer or worn electrodes

The transformer steps house current up to roughly 10,000 volts and arcs it across two electrodes to light the oil spray. Transformers weaken with age, and electrodes erode or drift out of position. The classic sign is a burner that hums, sprays, and locks out with no flame at all, or one that only misfires on cold, damp mornings.

6. A dirty cad cell flame sensor

The cad cell is a small photocell that stares at the flame and proves to the control that fire exists. Soot on its lens blinds it. The burner then lights normally, runs 15 to 45 seconds, and shuts down because the control never saw the flame it made. A lockout after a short run is the cad cell's signature move.

7. Water in the tank

Condensation and loose fill caps let water collect at the tank bottom, and water sits under oil. The pump pulls it in, the flame sputters out, and the control locks out. Water also breeds the bacteria that create sludge, so the two problems feed each other. A technician can test for water in minutes and treat or pump it out.

Why Oil Burner Lockouts Are a Long Island Specialty

How many times can I press the oil burner reset button?

Why does my burner lock out right after an oil delivery?

I ran out of oil. Will the burner start once the tank is filled?

Often not on its own. Running dry pulls air and bottom sludge into the fuel line, so the burner needs the line bled and primed, and usually a fresh filter. Some drivers prime the burner after a fill, but if yours locked out after an emergency delivery, it needs a service visit, not more resets.

The burner hums but never fires. What does that mean?

The motor and pump are running but there is no flame. The usual suspects are no oil reaching the nozzle, a clogged nozzle, or ignition that is too weak to light the spray. That symptom almost never fixes itself with resets. One press, then call, and tell us it hummed without firing.

Can water in my oil tank cause a lockout?
