What to Check Yourself Before You Call
These five checks take about 15 minutes and cost nothing. Two of them end more cold-air calls than any part on our truck.
1. Fan set to AUTO, not ON (1 minute). Look at the fan switch on the thermostat. On ON, the blower runs around the clock and pushes room-temperature air between heating cycles, which feels cold coming out of a vent. Switch it to AUTO so the fan only runs when the burner is making heat. This one setting explains a huge share of cold-air complaints.
2. Check the filter (2 minutes). A packed filter chokes airflow, the furnace overheats, and the high-limit switch cuts the burner while the fan keeps blowing. The result is cold air within minutes of a warm start. Hold the filter up to a light. If light does not pass through, put in a new one and give the furnace ten minutes.
3. Watch one full burner cycle (5 minutes). Turn the thermostat up 5 degrees and stand by the furnace. You should hear a small fan start, then clicking, then the sound of flame, then the main blower. Note where the sequence stops, and whether a flame lights and then dies seconds later. That one detail tells us if the problem is ignition or the flame sensor.
4. Open every vent and register (3 minutes). Walk the house and open any closed supply registers, and pull furniture and rugs off the returns. Closed vents raise pressure in the ducts and can overheat the furnace the same way a dirty filter does. More than a few cold rooms turn out to be a lever someone flipped in July.
5. One reset, and only one (2 minutes). Many furnaces flash an error code on a small LED behind a panel window, so write down the pattern before you reset anything. Cycle power at the service switch once, or press an oil burner reset button once. If it locks out again, stop and call. Repeated resets on an oil burner pump unburned oil into the chamber, and that turns a small repair into a big one.

Warm, Then Cold: Why a Flame Lights and Dies
The most telling cold-air pattern is a burner that lights and then quits within seconds. On most gas furnaces, a flame sensor must prove the burner is lit within a few seconds of ignition. When the sensor is coated with residue, it cannot read the flame, so the control board closes the gas valve as a safety move. The blower keeps running, and the house gets cold air.
A failed hot surface igniter behaves differently. You hear the startup sequence, but no flame sound follows, and after a few tries the furnace locks out. Igniters are brittle ceramic parts that simply wear out, and they are one of the most common cold-air repairs we make. Older furnaces with a standing pilot fail in their own way. A drafty basement or a weak thermocouple lets the pilot go out, and the burner has no way to light until it is restored.
Both the flame sensor and the igniter live inside the burner compartment, next to gas and flame. Cleaning or replacing them is fast work for a technician and not a homeowner job. Your part is the observation from check 3, which tells us which part to bring.
Cold Air by System Type
The cause list shifts with the equipment in your basement. Here is what changes.
Gas furnace
Beyond the igniter and flame sensor, two more safeties can hold the burner off. A blocked sidewall intake or exhaust pipe trips a pressure switch, so look outside for snow, leaves, or a nest in the white plastic pipes. On high-efficiency models, a frozen or clogged condensate line will also stop the burner while the fan runs. If your furnace drains to a small pump or floor drain, standing water there is worth mentioning when you call.
Oil furnace
When an oil burner fails to light, the control locks it out and the blower can keep circulating cold air. Check the tank gauge first, because a dry tank pulls sludge into the fuel line and causes repeat lockouts even after a delivery. Press the red reset button once at most. A burner that trips again has a fuel, nozzle, or ignition problem that needs a technician, not a second press.
Ductwork
Sometimes the furnace makes perfect heat and the ducts throw it away. Long Island duct runs often pass through attics and crawl spaces, and a separated joint up there dumps your heat outside while the registers blow lukewarm. Weak, cool airflow at the far rooms with strong warm flow near the furnace is the classic sign. Sealing and reconnecting ducts is one of the cheaper fixes in this guide, and it pays back every month on the heating bill.
Heat pump
If a heat pump heats your house, cool-feeling supply air may be completely normal. A furnace sends out air around 120 to 140°F, while a heat pump often supplies 85 to 95°F. That is warmer than the room and still heating the home, but it feels cool against your hand, which runs near 90°F. Judge a heat pump by the room temperature, not by the vent. If the house itself is losing ground, or the unit is running in AC mode by mistake, that is worth a call.

About a third of the homes we service heat with oil, so a fan pushing cold air over a locked-out oil burner is a daily call for us, not a footnote. On the North Fork and East End, a cold snap brings a wave of these lockouts, often from gelled fuel in outdoor tanks and exposed lines.
